Cleome spinosa (spider flower)

A native of tropical America, cleome is an interesting and showy annual. It is good for cutting. Prefers sandy soil and a sunny place, but will really grow anywhere within reason. No staking required although it reaches 3 to 5 ft.

Hibiscus (rose of sharon)

A native of India and China, hibiscus is a shrub with mallow like flowers, borne from late summer till frost. Loved by humming birds. Requires a partly sunny to sunny location. No pruning required.

Hydrangea macrophilla (also called hortensia)

Shrub with large globular heads of white, blue or pink flowers in summer. An alkaline (sweet) soil produces pink flowers. An acid (sour) soil produces blue flowers. Prune by cutting out old flowering shoots and weak growths immediately after blooming.
